On this day of beatification of Blessed Pope John II, let us also remember his predecessors who allowed him to (in the human order of things) become Pope in the first place. Let us remember Blessed Pope John XXIII of happy memory who raised him to the episcopate, Pope Paul VI of happy memory who outlined many of the themes of Vatican II, and Pope John Paul I of happy memory whose extremely brief term set up the election of Blessed Pope John Paul II of happy memory. Let us thank God for all of these men, all of whom have their honorable place in history of the Roman Catholic Church and the legacy of Blessed Pope John Paul.

These 40 Days of Lent

I've been seeing a lot of posts about Lent, especially since today's Ash Wednesday. It used to be a bigger deal when I was younger, but maybe that was because I was with my family or at a Catholic college (INO) or lastly in a very active Dominican parish. Now it seems to be a speed bump on my daily calendar. Being in a Catholic culture is very important to a faith life. I think its the advantage we have over the strictly me-thou relationships touted by our more radical separated brethren. it is also why the Church emphasizes in the Readings for Ash Wednesday (Find them here). The readings are placed in the community, not to the individual on his own. Why? Because the individual can't maintain the pace on his own, he needs to support of others (much like the cheering crowds lining a marathon boosting the runner to the finish line).

Consider the 3 practices the Church emphasizes during Lent.

Fasting is by far the one the gets the greatest emphasis ("I'm giving up such and such for Lent" is a form of fasting in my book). (Side thought: If you're giving up something what's replacing it? "Nature abhors a vacuum" --> Back to your regularly scheduled discourse...).
Almsgiving and Prayer are also part of this Lenten season. To what are you giving? Are you limiting yourself to giving money? Are you accepting the help being offered to you? (There are 2 sides to an act of charity, and to receive graciously is just as much an act of charity as giving). Are you giving effectively? (You can bury someone in charity and do additional harm, but to give what is truly needed, even if a small amount, works miracles!).
What is the nature of your prayer? Are you bombarding God with Rosaries and devotions, or are you saying them contentiously and intently (I HATE going to funeral Rosaries where the prayers are spouted off like machine gun bullets without the time or ability to think about either the person we're remembering or the Mystery we're supposed to be contemplating). I call on you to pray BETTER rather than MORE this Lent, as God (already) know we need every bit of help we can get. Also pray in thanksgiving for the gifts He already gives us. Think of how often you give a gift and it remains unacknowledged or unappreciated (like a gift of underwear at Christmas). Or when was the last time God was asked "What do You want for Lent?" (Yeah, I know God doesn't need anything, but He likes to get asked...)

Anyway, that's just a few ideas I've been kicking around in my head. Please remember those who are joining the Church this Easter. (I've always loved doing the RCIA, and know that they're really just now are realizing just what they're getting themselves into.). Have a blessed Lent, and God Bless You.

I've sent my last greeting card. Period.

I sent my niece a birthday card for her birthday mid-December. I've sent my brothers, nieces, and nephews birthday cards, and until a few years ago I sent Christmas cards. I also used to send the nieces and nephews Christmas and birthday folding money until I ran into a streak of unemployment about six years ago. I used to get acknowledgment of said gifts and cards from some the nieces and nephews, but in the last 20 years (or so) nothing from the brothers.

This acknowledgment no longer happens.

I received one card for my last birthday, a postcard from my insurance company (the kind where everyone signs a stack of them January 1st for the entire year). I received a couple of Facebook well wishes (thanks to those who sent one), a couple of forwarded messages from an online calender reminder system (hit the REPLY button on the email toolbar, add a comment, and be done in 20 seconds), and a phone call the following weekend from some friends in San Francisco who were driving to Reno for a holiday dinner with family.

Nothing for Christmas.

So I've quit. I'm tired of the cards going one way . I have no idea if the cards have reached their destination unless I make a point of asking the addressee directly. I don't know if the cards will be missed at all.

But I'm tired of it all. I made an effort. Now I've given up. To the greeting card industry I offer my humble apologies.

I don't like to write about politics (as my POV is sure to raise ruckus on both sides of the aisle) but I'm PO'd with the TV News. I was watching the coverage of O-No's speech to Congress yesterday, and the networks made it look like Congress was a bunch of Jack-in-the-boxes (especially the odd couple - Pelosi & Biden, the couple from CINO), but they made the mistake of showing a view from the Speaker's rostrum which showed that the only people jumping to their feet during one of these "butt-lifting" occasions were the Cabinet members sitting in the front row; most of Congress, Asses & Trunks alike, were sitting in their seats with arms crossed. How about reporting FACTUAL, REAL, ACCURATE, NEWS folks? I'd like to know what my representatives actual actions are, so I know whether to give him/her a severance package next election

I consider myself an Ignatian in my spirituality, and I'm sending out a Happy Feastday to all my fellow Ignatius fans out there!

I think the Church has done a great disservice to Iggy by not making him a Doctor of the Church, as his spirituality has, positively and negatively, influenced modern development of Catholic theology and philosophy since the Protestant so-called Reformation. Most of the negative influence was not generated by Iggy himself, but by 1960's & 70's pseudo-intellectuals of his Society who thought psychology and sociology were more important than Orthodox Catholic Teaching. In my not-so-humble opinion, this distortion of Ignatian spirituality (along with the suppression of the Society in the 18th century) have kept Iggy from getting his "Doctorate".

This individual is the most unqualified person to declare his candidacy for California governor. I was living in San Francisco when he was first elected as mayor. He immediately was discovered to be having an affair. Like his predecessor and demigod, "Slick" Willie Brown, all part of the Burton machine of San Francisco along with Nancy Pelosi et. al., he is no Liberal but a Libertine who believes he's above the law. He's Not The Only One Who's Back...

Yep. I'm back with Mother Church. I made my Confession on Good Friday, and I made the Easter Vigil. Honey, I'm Hooooome!
I think you can tell a lot about a parish by 2 things, how they celebrate the Vigil and the size of their RCIA class who “graduate” at the Vigil. The parish I attended last night got mixed review, but I think they have possibilities. I'll be investigating them over the next few weeks to see if I want to invest with them. (I purposely am not identifying the parish in case they read this blog (like THAT's likely! SNARK!)
First, their RCIA class was impressive, the likes I haven't seen since my days at St. Dominic's in San Francisco. If the number of new Catholics in this class is any indication, there's hope for the future of the Church. (Yeah, I know, Christ is the Hope of the Church so there can be no failure, but you know what I mean).
However, they only get a “C” for the Vigil celebration. Positively this parish did CELEBRATE Easter. On the downside, however, there's room for improvement. When I arrived early, the Jazz choir was practicing so the silence of the empty church was lost (Haven't hey heard of symbolism?). The lectors were testing microphones and in general there was a constant buzz of conversation. The presentation of the ceremony was more of a theatrical presentation than one of worship. The use of their projection system was used effectively to project the lighting of the Easter candle (which most of us miss unless we belong to a small parish). Unfortunately they also used it during the readings (now wonder there's a lack of imagination in our Catholics!_. I am not a traditionalist, but there are some parts of the Mass for which the Classics are the best, notably those related to Mass parts (like the Gloria). These classics were ignored (even to the point of using a Protestant version of the Our Father).
I also should have brought Elmer Fudd from from my side bar. Yup, there were liturgical dancers, during the Gloria, the Procession of the Oils, and the procession of the newly Baptized (they omitted the presentation of the Baptismal Candles for some reason. They entered the Church with lighted candles during the Procession of the Easter Candle into the Church (before they were Baptized), and again after their Baptism.)
I also missed some important classics in terms of music. They didn't intone the 3-Fold (Easter Vigil) Alleluia before the Gospel, and Jesus Christ is Risen Today was sung after the Recessional. (why do choirs sing that hymn at half tempo? Makes it sound like a funeral dirge!).
While I have some complaints, I have seen worse. I hope that I see some improvement. I'll try to keep you apprised of developments. Stay tuned.

I'm glad Confession hasn't come to this:

I know I've got some people curious about my "confession", and why I should make it public. But even AA recognises the need to acknowledge the ramifications of our failings and to make amends if possible. My sin may not be as bad as this, but still might get me here or, maybe the modern equivalent.

This confession may sound "tongue-in-cheek", and may have elements which are such. But the general topic is as serious as it can get. It is more of an examination of conscience.

I'm going to ask my readers not to comment on how wrong my actions are, for you won't say anything I haven't said to myself. I'm not writing this to brag or to be funny, but to get my own thoughts organized and to see what ideas my fellow travelers have to bring me closer to God an His Church.

Enough stalling. Here it goes.

I haven't been to Mass since Easter.

Why is this important? I know that I need to be fed by the Word, and by the Eucharist. I need my brothers and sisters in Christ. I have no problem with the teachings of the Church.

I think my problem is that I don't have a parish that I think of as "home". I used to have a "home" parish 3 years ago, but then the parish staff decided to take over many of the activities done my parishioners. I was involved with RCIA formation for about 10 years, then the pastor hired a "lay formation" educator and he basically put a number of us "out of business". The same thing happened to liturgical ministers, many times resulting in more "performance" services and fewer Liturgies.

As bad as these changes were, at least I was being fed Liturgically. My intellect was being fed as well as the rest of my being. Then I was forced to move (due to employment) and my current local parish is of the Kwik-E-Mart variety. I tried joining the RCIA formation team, but he program had very little in the way of catechetical formation and consisted primarily of "faith sharing" the Sunday readings. Formation of liturgical ministers was of the same caliber. The preaching from the pulpit is of the same level, kind of like eating pure meringue, all sugar and no substance.
I can't blame my problem all on the parish. I suffer from depression, and all I don't have this problem personally alcoholism is prevalent in my family. While I've never been an active person, I also often suffer from a lack of energy. I often spend the weekend in bed and/or watching TV.
So what is my plan of action? First, I need to find a parish where my needs both spiritually and intellectually are met. Second, I need to get to Confession, the Mass, and probably the Anointing of the Sick. Third, find some place where I can participate is spiritual Formation, as this seems to be my Gift from God to the Church.
Finally, let me ask your forgiveness, brothers & sisters. Not only have I been missing you; but you have been missing me from the Body. I think this is the thing I've been missing the most over the weeks I've been "missing in action". God willing, I may soon be worthy of your company again.
